This was our first experience with Mardi Gras, and I must say it exceeded my expectations. There are parades for almost two weeks straight, and I'm talking two-three hour parades with 25-50+ floats, plus marching bands, dance troupes, etc. It was an onslaught of New Orleans culture, and we LOVED it! All the parades have a theme, royalty floats complete with feather headdress-laden people, and just about anything you can imagine. And the loot they throw to the crowds is insane. We didn't even make it to some of the big parades, and yet we still have a huge box of stuffed animals, beads, plastic cups, and miscellaneous "junk".
